Letter From Poland
Written and performed by Michael Wrynn Doyle

Letter from Poland is based on true events as experienced by author and performer Michael Wrynn Doyle. An overeager American student in Poland is met with the challenge of directing a group of Catholic Missionaries in a staging of The Good Samaritan. However, his desire to create a theatrical innovation may clash with the Word of the Lord. Where God's love and Grotowski's vision diverge is the source of many a Polish joke.

The story examines that which is essential to the creation of theatre, through means that are inherently and purposely theatrical. The performance utilizes a minimum of production values in order to bring focus back to the actor as the most essential and creative source of storytelling in theatre.

The play is performed as a comedic monodrama in the style of Ruth Draper, in which one man engages in a dialogue with unseen characters, ultimately revealing his own misguidance from behind a priggish facade. Performing the voice of the only seen character, creates the challenge of fully realizing the dialogue being acted with unseen, unheard characters, however, it is precisely this exercise which mirrors the true essence of theatre: to engage in a dialogue with the audience, who are often silent themselves. This play allows for an imaginative, engaging, hilarious experience that illustrates why theatre is so potent a form of storytelling.
